Kevin Magnussen: After McLaren, I spent every penny, the bank blocked the cards. The future wife paid for a ticket with a low-cost airline for the DTM tests

Magnussen told how he was left without money after losing his place in F1. Former Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen shared the story of meeting his future wife Louise after leaving McLaren.
The Dane made his F1 debut for McLaren in 2014, but lost the cockpit at the beginning of 2015. In 2016, Kevin managed to return to the championship with Renault.
She worked as a waitress in a restaurant, and I just started flirting with her there. I had just lost my job at McLaren and we met at a time when I was pretty depressed.
She was studying and was going to become a teacher, and I lived in her small apartment. In fact, she took care of me, and not the other way around.
I`ve completely run out of money. I paid a significant portion of what I made to the investor. And I was young and stupid, so I let the rest go. I spent every penny I earned that year. So just a few months into the next year, I simply ran out of money.
I had no income. The bank blocked all my cards. So when I received an offer from Toto [Wolff] to do DTM tests with Mercedes, I couldn’t even buy a ticket with [low-cost airline] EasyJet. She paid for it. I borrowed her card to get to these tests and buy food and gas for the rental car. It was just amazing of her, ” Magnussen said.
Kevin reported that the main outcome of his career is also related to his family:
[F1] has given me the opportunity to live a privileged life. First and foremost, I now look at the situation as a father. I support my family and have the opportunity to do this while driving a car and enjoying life.
This is a huge advantage that few people have. I can spend as much time with my kids as I want and there will still be food on the table. You know, this is the main result of my career. That`s what I`m most grateful for.
